I think that sensor can trigger a cel. The check engine light came up a few days ago and went to a mechanic which put the tester on my car, result was: Ordered an oem sensor from fcpeuro and threw it on and now the lights gone.

Web look coolant light should not come on, but ses/cel/mil light should light when ignition it turned on just before the crank position. Web it's your check engine light. Bmw e46 check engine and coolant light!

You get an engine symbol to tell you there are codes stored. As the title says, my engine light does not illuminate when i turn the key to ignition on position, but it sure does illuminate when i do the cluster test. Suggest you read codes and/or trigger a code and make sure the ses/cel/mil light actually lights are works as expected.
